Three persons were killed and 31 others injured when a bus carrying pilgrims overturned after crashing into an electric pole along the Badulla–Mahiyanganaya main road near Thibirigaspitiya this afternoon (21), police said.
The victims, all residents of the Pahalagama area in Thambuttegama, Anuradhapura, had been returning home after a pilgrimage to the Mahamewuna Asapuwa in Ella Kumbalwela and a visit to the Muthiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya in Badulla.
The injured were admitted to the Badulla Teaching Hospital, and the police confirmed that several are in critical condition.
The driver and conductor of the bus escaped unharmed. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
