Two separate bus accidents reported within hours of each other have left one person dead and over 30 others injured, police confirmed.
Early this morning (24), an accident occurred on the Colombo–Wellawaya main road in the Weliara area when a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus travelling from Batticaloa to Galle rammed into the rear of a tipper truck. The accident took place around 2.45 a.m., injuring 12 passengers and the truck driver. One of the injured bus passengers, who was in critical condition, later succumbed to injuries. All the injured were admitted to Tangalle Hospital. Police are investigating the incident.
Just hours earlier, around 11.45 p.m. yesterday (23), another major accident was reported from the Toppass area on the Nuwara Eliya–Kandy main road. A private bus carrying 54 passengers veered off the road and overturned while travelling from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy. Twenty-three people, including the driver and conductor, were injured and admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital.
According to police, the group had been returning from a leisure trip from Kurunegala to Badulla. All injured passengers are residents of Kiriwaula, Kurunegala. Nuwara Eliya Police are conducting further investigations.
