The visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, today (24).held several meetings opening his visit in Sri Lanka.
He called on Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and Foreign Affairs Minister Vijith Herath separately while several other meetings and visits have been organized for tomorrow.
At the meeting with the Justice Minister held today afternoon, Chief Justice Murudhu Fernando, Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe and Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle were associated with the meeting.
UN Resident Co-oridnator Marc-André Franche was also present.
Earlier in the day the visiting UN official met with Minister Herath.
Matters of mutual interest concerning human rights were taken up at the meeting.
“We discussed matters of mutual interest related to human rights, where I reiterated the Government’s commitment to continued constructive engagement,” Minister Herath said in a ‘X’ post.
Minister Herath also briefed him on the progress made in national reconciliation efforts and the advancement of human rights since the current administration took office.
Mr Türk, will remain in the country until June 26
He is also due to visit the North.
