Weligama PS chairman shot dead

News

Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Lasantha Wickramasekara died from gunshot injuries a short while ago.

He was shot during the Public Day at the Council meeting.

He died on admission to the Matara General Hospital.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised the issue in parliament this morning stating that "public representatives are unable to conduct their public day even in their official capacity, which raises a question about national security.

Meanwhile, four teams have been assigned to investigate the murder of the Chairman, Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police, F. U. Wootler said.

The gunman's CCTV camera footage has been found.

The gunman had entered the council claiming they had come to get a letter signed by the chairman.
