World population eight billion

News

World population reached eight billion on Tuesday (November 15) according to the United Nations, with India set to pass China as first in population within next year.

With higher life expectancies, lower rates of infant or maternal deaths upon birth, a population of around 1 billion had increased within 12 years.

A significant increase of population is to be seen in Asian countries such as India,Pakistan and Philippines and African countries including Egypt, Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria, by 2050.

However, the pace of growth of human population has decreased and a decline is expected after reaching a peak of 10.4 billion in 2080.

All bilateral loans postponed until 2028; President

In his special statement, President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that debt restructuring agreements will postpone all bilateral loan payments to foreign countries until 2028. Additionally, Sri Lanka will have until 2043 to repay these loans on concessional terms.
