Army launches search operation for unexploded ammunition

News

Army has launched a search of unexploded ammunition devices around the Salawa, Kosgama army camp after a major fire in the ammunition dump killing at least one soldier and leaving behind 47 injured.

Residents living in a one kilometer radius have been told to remain away from their homes. Military spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said civilians can inform the army about any ammunition or other devices which may have fallen into their gardens or houses following the fire.

He said that the army has advised that those living one kilometre away from the camp not to return until further notice. Initially persons living in a radius of six km were told to leave their homes.

The fire was brought under control by Monday morning, but secondary explosions have been heard. Residents said some of their houses had been damaged due to shrapnel or vibrations. Most of the injured persons had only minor injuries.

The army was in the process of clearing the camp. President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered a full investigation about the incident.
