Cabinet has granted approval to allocate Rs 250 million as compensation to farmers affected by Fall Army worm also known as 'Sena'.
A group of UNP parliamentarians who had met at Temple Trees yesterday had agreed to take necessary measures by considering the worm's threat as a national disaster, UNP parliamentarians said yesterday (Jan 21).
Certain parliamentarians while expressing their views had said that the threat of the fall-army worm had increased due to the spontaneous change of government in October.
The group claimed that there was no government to act accordingly when the threat was first identified.
It is estimated that nearly 20 percent of the total harvest has been affected by this worm which had destroyed an estimated 40,000 acres of corn fields.
