The term of the 45th Chief Justice Priyasad Dep comes to an end today.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday informed Parliament that the Constitutional Council will convene at noon today to reach a final decision pertaining to the new appointment for the post.
Under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the Constitutional Council is vested with the responsibility of appointing a new Chief Justice.
The 10 member Council is Chaired by the Speaker of House, while the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader, six Parliamentarians and three civilians comprise of the Council.
CHief Justice Dep joined the Attorney Generals' Department as a State Coundel in 1978 and went on to occupy positions such as Senior State Counsel, Additional Solicitor General and Solicitor General before becoming a Supreme Court judge in 2011.
He was appointed as Chief Justice in March 2, 2017.
