Twelve students of the Colombo University who were arrested over the assault of another student were remanded in custody till January 13 after being produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court today (11).
The suspects are also due to be produced before an identification parade on that date.
The 12 students from the university's Arts Faculty were taken into custody by the Cinnamon Gardens Police over an assault on another student at the university premises on January 8. One student who was injured in the incident was later admitted to hospital.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena has appealed to the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) to support Government efforts to eradicate ragging from universities. The Minister stated that a new programme will be implemented to eradicate ragging from the university system and said he expects the IUSF to support these efforts as it too claims it opposes ragging.
