The proposals put forward regarding the education sector in this year's budget have been criticised by the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU).
The CTU claims that the government is encouraging the privatisation of education by providing loans to students who had failed to qualify for university entrance.
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, yesterday (Mar 05) put forward a proposal to allocate Rs 200 million to establish a 'My Future' loan scheme that would enable students to pursue their higher education at non-state universities.
Mr. Samaraweera during the budget reading claimed that only 30,000 students enter state universities from a total of 300,000 students who sit for their G.C.E. Advanced Level examinations every year.
"The government should allocate money to strengthen the university system instead of providing such loans," CTU Secretary Joseph Stalin said.
