Drivers who violate the recently-implemented traffic lane rules repeatedly could pay fines upto Rs 25,000, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today (Jun 12).
The Police Spokesman noted that drivers who are caught breaking such rules could either pay a fine of Rs 2000 or face a trial before court.
The fine will have to be paid within two weeks, Mr. Gunasekara said. He added that drivers who fail to pay the fine within this time period will be given another two-week extension to pay the fine which would then be doubled.
However, fines ranging between Rs 2500 – Rs 3500 will be imposed on drivers who are found guilty before court for the first time.
Fines between Rs 3500 – Rs 10,000 and Rs 10,000 – 25,000 will be imposed on drivers found guilty for the second and third times respectively.
Drivers who violate Section 148 of the Motor Traffic Act will be considered as violators of traffic lane rules, the Police Spokesman explained.
He noted that nearly 600 cases of violating the lane rules had been reported during a two hour operation carried out by the city traffic police last evening.
Nearly 500 police officers clad in both uniform and civil attire had been deployed for this operation. The assistance of CCTV cameras monitored by the Police had also been sought to apprehend law breaking drivers, the Police Spokesman added.
The traffic lane rule was implemented this week after a two-week grace period was provided for drivers to adapt themselves to the law.
