Estate strike temporarily called off

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) says that estate sector trade unions have temporarily called off their indefinite strike till December 19. 

CWC Vice President S. Arulsamy told Times Online that the decision to temporarily call off the strike effective from today (10) was taken after CWC President and MP Arumugam Thondaman met with President Maithripala Sirisena last night. 

"The President said he will convene a meeting of all stakeholders at 10.00am on December 19 at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the issue. He asked us to call off the strike until then taking into account the country's economic situation and the current political crisis," Mr Arulsamy stated. 

He added that the CWC is confident that the President's intervention will produce an acceptable solution. 

The issue of workers' wages during the period where they went on strike will also be discussed during the December 19 meeting, he further stressed.  

The strike, spearheaded by the CWC, was launched on December 4 demanding that estate workers' daily wage be increased from Rs.500 to Rs. 1000.
