The Justice Ministry will instruct the legal draftsman to prepare a bill in order to increase the fines imposed for violating the Penal Code.
A committee had been appointed to study the deficiencies in the existing laws which has resulted in an increase in violations.
This committee had recommended that the fines be increased for offences committed under the Penal Code.
Accordingly, Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale had submitted a cabinet proposal to this effect following which it had been approved yesterday (Aug 27).
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
