GMOA decides to continue strike action

News

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) says that the island-wide strike launched from 8.00am this morning will be extended indefinitely.

GMOA representatives convened an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss further action, where it was decided to continue the ongoing strike action indefinitely.

The strike was launched today to protest against the actions of the police and Special Task Force (STF) when dispersing student demonstrators during yesterday's protest against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

Protesters forcibly entered the Health Ministry premises during yesterday's protest and occupied one of the buildings there. Police and STF later dispersed them using a baton charge and water cannon. Almost 90 students, including female students and Buddhist Monks, suffered injuries in the incident. Several police and STF officers were also wounded.
