The government informed the Parliament today that the decision to cremate all victims of Coronavirus (COVID19) is currently under re-consideration as a committee is appointed to look into the matter.
Justice Minister Ali Sabry responding to a query raised by the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa who charged that Muslims are being targetted with the blanket ban on burial, said that the committee is appointed to reconsider the ban after several requests made by Islamic bodies to the government.
He also requested the Opposition Leader not to politicise the matter.
Earlier the government issued a circular for mandatory cremation for all COVID-19 related deaths even though an interim guidance published by the WHO in March said victims of coronavirus "can be buried or cremated", and does not mention dangers to groundwater.
