A Grama Sevaka (GS) attached to the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat of Mannar was found dead with severe injuries last night, Iluppaikadavai police said.
The officer was identified as S. Vijiyendran (55), current Grama Sevaka of Iluppaikadavai village, Mannar. Police said that the victim suffered severe injuries based on preliminary investigations held by police today.
Mannar Acting Magistrate I. Kayas Feldano visited the location today where the victim was found with injuries. The motorbike and the helmet of the victim were seen at the scene with blood straints. The magistrate ordered the police to hand over the body to the relatives after performing judicial procedures.
Locals said that the Grama Sevaka was attacked by unknown persons last night when he was returning to home after work near Aathimottai, Kalliyadi area. He was pronounced dead on admission to Pallamadu Base hospital.
Locals said the late Grama Sevaka was outspoken against ongoing illegal land mining in the Manthai West DS division and took stern steps to curb such illegal activities in his area.
