Hambantota Port workers return to work

Employees at the Magampura Port in Hambantota returned to work yesterday after suspending their protest. The workers had been conducting their protest and Satyagraha campaign since December 7. However, the protest was finally suspended yesterday after discussions with Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga.

The workers had been demanding that the Government take steps to absorb 483 workers to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The resolution was reached just hours before the expiry of a Government deadline for striking workers to return to work before 2pm or be sacked.
