The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) wrote to the Department of Prisons expressing deep concerns by complaints it received on alleged life threats to Shani Abeysekera, former Head of Crime Investigation Department (CID) who is currently in custody, according to a letter sent by one of the Commissioners.
The letter sent by Ramani Muttettuwegama, Commissioner in charge of investigations and inquiries indicated that Mr Abeysekara who has been infected with COVID-19 is currently remanded at the Mahara prison. "There is also a high degree of concern that this may pose a threat to Mr Abeysekara's life,"
The HRCSL urged the Prisons Department to take strong preventive measures to be taken to protect his life while ensuring he receives proper treatment at the nearest hospital treating people infected by the virus immediately.
Stressing that the HRCSL is mandated to ensure the welfare of those deprived of liberty under HRCSL Act 21 of 1996, the Commission instructed the Prisons Department to inform about the action taken in this regard and its observation before November 30.

Water rose to the height of the Cross of the Chrurch at Getambe and the water was so high that it engulfed the Getambe Rajaponawarma Temple leaving only a few leaves of the Bo-tree visible.
The Colombo Additional Magistrate has ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate and submit a report over a complaint about the alleged illegal assets gained by model Piumi Hansamali.
