The hunger fast demanding the establishment of the Kalmunai North Divisional Secretariat as an independent body had been called off this afternoon.
A monk and a Hindu priest had staged a hunger strike demanding that the Secretariat must be given control over land areas and financial matters.
The fast entered its sixth day today (Jun 22) and had been called off following the intervention of Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero.
Earlier this week, Internal and Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena stated that this issue would be resolved within three months.
The Minister noted that a special committee has been appointed to listen to the complaints that have been raised against establishing the Divisional Secretariat as an independent body.
