The JVP-led trade union at the Colombo port announced on Monday that union workers will launch a strike on Thursday against government plans to lease out the Hambantota port to Chinese authorities.
JVP trade union leader Chandrasiri Mahagamage told reporters that they would be able to obtain the support of all port workers although other unions did not participate at the media briefing this afternoon as previously planned.
The strike action will be preceded by a demonstration outside the Colombo port on Wednesday. Port Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe is expected to submit the cabinet paper in this regard tomorrow. The agreement is likely to be signed on July 30. (Sunimalee)
