At least 27 milking cows were killed due to lightning in Vakarai, Batticaloa on Monday night, local authorities said.
The dairy farm owner claimed that he had invested millions of rupees by obtaining a bank loan to set up the farm which returned him with daily income of Rs 20,000. He lamented that he had lost the main source of income for his family.
Officials attached to the Disaster Management Centre in Batticaloa visited the farm yesterday and assured him to take steps to provide his compensation. Meanwhile, the Navy came forward to offer their bacheo tractor to bury the dead cows.
