Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe today said the SLFP's position regarding the system to conduct the Provincial council polls was it should be held under a mixed electoral system.
“This is based on the party’s policy”, Mr Samarasinghe told a SLFP news conference.
The Minister was responding to the statement made by Minister Dr Rajitha Senarathne during yesterday's cabinet news briefing where he said the SLFP was yet to make its position clear.
Minister Rajitha Senaratne yesterday said that every political party except the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) have agreed upon holding the Provincial Council Election under the old electoral system.
Mr. Samarasinghe said that the mixed electoral system was first proposed by the President and the United National Party.
He also added that when the 19th amendment was passed in parliament with the majority of the SLFP it was a consensus that the Parliamentary and Provincial Council elections would be held under the mixed electoral system.
He also added that the party was against the postponing of elections.
