Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has instructed the Customs Director General to investigate and submit a report on the recent import of waste to the country.
Mr. Samaraweera had issued these instructions upon arrival to the island following an overseas visit, the Ministry of Finance said.
The Finance Minister had pointed out that the environment authority must approve the import of industrial waste from an overseas country.
Accordingly, he had instructed Customs Director General P.S.M Charles to investigate as to whether there was a breach of regulations in this instance.
