A mother and her daughter were killed in an accident involving a motorcycle and a train in Ja-ela at 2:45 pm today (Jan 19).
The train which was travelling towards Colombo from Halawatha had collided with the motorcyle on the Thudella railway crossing.
The victims have been identified as 36- year old Sumali Silvani and her daughter Chanchala Samudaya aged eight who are residents of Ja-ela.
Another individual who had sustained injuries in the accident was admitted to the Ragama General Hospital, police said.
Police pointed out that there has been no railway gate keeper at the said crossing for several years.
