National Colleges of Education are to be upgraded to university status to offer degrees for teachers in future.
This was after a proposal submitted by Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma received cabinet approval yesterday (Dec 4).
The education minister in his proposal had said the project aims to see all teachers obtaining degrees.
Accordingly, an expert panel of academics is to be appointed to make recommendations on the academic and legal aspects of the initiative.
The National Instuitute of Education website shows that there are 19 National Colleges of Education in the country.
Meanwhile, the education sector is to be classified as a ‘closed service’.
Accordingly, teachers, Principals, teaching consultants, and education administrative officers will be considered a separate cadre in the public service.
This would assist in expediting the process of resolving problems faced by education sector employees, and to enhance their professionalism, the education minister had said in a proposal.
Accordingly, a panel of experts will be appointed to make recommendations towards implementing this project.
