The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) arrested two suspects along with 70 gold biscuits yesterday (16).
The biscuits each weighed 100 grams, making the entire haul 7 kilgrams of gold.
According to group of naval personnel onboard a Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Northern Naval Command intercepted a suspicious dinghy in the seas northwest of Kankesanthurai Lighthouse. They apprehended the two suspects inside the dinghy with 70 gold biscuits in their possession.
The stock of gold had been concealed in the boat’s anchor. It was revealed that the suspects were attempting to smuggle the consignment into India via sea, the navy added.
The apprehended persons, seized consignment of gold and dinghy were handed over to the Sri Lanka Customs for onward action.
Meanwhile, the Navy also nabbed two persons with 600 g of gold in Pesalei, Mannar on 10 January.
