The Election Commission is to meet again this week to finalize the new date for the upcoming General elections, Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said today.
The Commission which met today has decided to take up the matter again later this week to fix the new date after discussions with necessary stakeholders including health authorities over the current COVID-19 situation in the country.
However, the Commission decided today to issue preferential numbers of some 7000 candidates who are contesting the upcoming elections tomorrow through a gazette notification.
Earlier, the Commission postponed the polls till June 20 due to the coronavirus global pandemic but later informed the Supreme Court when violations of Fundamental Rights petitions were heard last week that it was not possible to conduct the polls due to current situation prevails in the country.
