No doubts over independent commissions: Speaker

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has clarified that neither the President nor the Prime Minister had expressed doubts or contradictory statements with regard to the functioning or independence of the independent commissions established by the Constitutional Council (CC).

Issuing a special statement, the Speaker's office stated that many chairpersons and members of independent commissions had inquired from the Speaker if higher echelons of the Government had communicated to the CC any such doubts over the activities of the commissions. 

The Speaker, in his capacity as the Chairman of the CC, communicated with the relevant parties and had noted that neither the President nor the PM entertained such doubts or expressed contradictory statements. 

As such, the Speaker had stated with confidence that both the President and PM were of the stance that any attempts to influence the activities of the independent commissions should not be allowed. 

The Speaker had further assured all chairpersons and members of the independent commissions of the fullest cooperation of the CC regarding their activities in coordination with the President, PM and other relevant bodies.
