A wealthy gem merchant belived to be a founding member of the National Thowheed Jamath group has been remanded until May 10 after several suspicious items were discovered at his residence recently.
Police had seized 591 air rifle bullets, a luxury jeep, two passports, foreign currency and receipts acknowledging payments made to members of the NTJ group, during a search carried out recently.
The search was carried out by the Panadura (North) Police, the Special Task Force and the Army.
It has been revealed that the businessman had contested under the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) banner at a previous election but had failed to win a parliamentary seat.
