An individual who falsely alerted the police regarding a possible attack on Parliament was arrested in Ella today (Jul 14).
The suspect, in a telephone call to the Police Emergency Unit, had claimed that eight persons at a mosque in Pettah had plotted the attack. An investigation had then revealed that the warnings were false, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.
Police had then traced the number of the caller - a 57-year old identified as Baba Ahamed Brown, who had been residing at a rented house in Ella, the Spokesman said. The National Identity Card (NIC) of the suspect had shown that he was a resident of Borella.
Investigations had revealed that the caller's SIM had been purchased and registered using the NIC of the house owner. The suspect is currently being questioned by the Pettah Police, the Police Spokesman noted.
