One person has been arrested in connection with the death of a tusker who was found electrocuted at Kalmadukulam in Kilinochchi.
Area residents had informed Dharmapuram police last evening (27) after seeing the body of the tusker lying at a paddy field. The police in turn had informed the Department of Wildlife Conservation's Kilinochchi office.
Wildlife officers who visited the scene to investigate had found that the tusker had been electrocuted after being entangled in electrical wires that had been laid around the paddy field. Accordingly, they had arrested the owner of the paddy field on suspicion of causing the animal's death.
The deceased tusker is thought to be about 17 years of age and was in the prime of its life, according to wildlife officials. Its tusks too had grown to about two metres in length.
The suspect was to be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate today.
