Parliament proceedings came to an abrupt end today after Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had to adjourn sittings over the disagreement on a day to debate the removal of Mohan Peiris and re instatement of Shirani Bandaranayke as Chief Justice. Opposition legislators sought a debate today itself after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe made a detailed statement on the circumstances that led to the removal of Peiris and the reinstatement of Bandaranayke. However the government said they would fix another day to debate the statement .This led to the House being adjourned twice but dispute the closed door meetings to come to an agreement , this failed promoting the Speaker to adjourn proceedings. Earlier the Prime Minister in his statement said that the due process for the removal of Shirani Bandaranayke had not been completed and hence the appointment of Mohan Peries to the post is null and void. He added that attempts were made to get Peries to retire but failed. He said Peiris had courted Presidnet Maithriapala Sirisema, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and him to stay as Chief Justice. He had also sought a diplomatic posting.
