Petition seeking order to implement visual pollution laws fixed for Oct 31
The mandamus writ petition seeking to instruct the implementation of laws against visual pollution has been fixed for October 31 by the Appeal Court.
A two-member judge bench comprising Justices Janak de Silva and Nishshanka Bandula Karunaratne had issued the order when the case was taken up today (Oct 21).
The Centre for Enviornmental Justice had filed the petition naming the Central Enviornmental Authority (CEA), Police Chief Chandana Wickramaratne and the Attorney General as respondents.
The petitioners argued that the CEA had failed to implement laws against visual pollution caused by banners and hoardings, despite preparing the laws in 2014.
They pointed out that there is a "grave necessity" to implement these laws in line with the upcoming elections. Accordingly, the petitioners sought a court order instructing the CEA, to implement these laws in due course.
