A fire broke out today early morning in Piduruthalagala Forest Reserve in Nuwara Eliya destroying about one acre of the reserve.
The fire was brought under control about five hours later by the Nuwara Eliya fire brigade with the help of army, police, Wild Life Department and the residents in the area.
Police believe the fire was caused by an arsonist who set fire to the forest near the Lover’s Leap water fall on the Eastern slope about 10.30 in the night.
Meanwhile another fire was reported at about 11 a.m. today, in a Patana near the Galway’s reserve, which was also successfully managed by the same fire brigade.
Environmentalists emphasize the need to be vigilant to prevent these incidents under the currently prevailing dry weather condition in the area.
