A police sub-inspector attached to the Warakapola police division was hospitalised after he was stabbed while attending an anti-narcotics programme in Palamure earlier today (Feb 21).
He is currently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Warakapola Base Hospital.
The victim has been identified as Upali Samarasekara. Mr Samarasekera was actively engaged in anti-narcotic programmes by delivering several awareness speeches across the country.
The stabbing had taken place when the sub-inspector had attended an anti-narcotic poster campaign organised by the students of Palamure Primary school in the vicinity of the Niyadurupola Rubbery factory.
An individual who sells moonshine spirits in the area had reportedly stabbed the victim while also protesting against the poster campaign.
