President Maithripala Sirisena has vested additional powers with the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attacks.
These powers had been granted through a gazette dated October 18.
Accordingly, the Commission will be able to instruct the manager of any bank to submit financial records of the individual being investigated by the commission, or the person’s family.
Similar instructions could be issued to the Commissioner-General of the Inland Revenue Department.
The gazette had been issued by President’s Secretary Udaya Seneviratne on orders of the President.
President Sirisena had appointed a five-member PCoI on September 20, headed by Appeal Court judge Janak de Silva to investigate into the terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday in April this year.
Other members of the PCoI include Appeal Court judge Nissanka Bandula Karunarathna, former Appeal Court judges Nihal Rajapaksa, and Bandula Kumara Atapattu, and retired ministry secretary M.S. Adikari.
The PCoI is required to submit its interim report in December, and the final report by March, 2020.
