Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said that 90 percent of evening office trains are expected to be in operation today (Oct 8), after unionists called off their strike action last evening.
Mr. Fernando noted that drivers who operate trains outside Colombo have been deployed to their respective train stations.
Meanwhile, State Transport Minister Ashok Abeysinghe said that Army personnel would be trained as drivers, superintendents, and controllers to operate train services at times of emergency.
Railway trade unions had called off their 12-day long indefinite strike citing salary anomalies, after discussions with the President and officials at the Transport Ministry.
