Railway stations along the Northern rail line are to be powered using solar energy systems from this week onwards, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said.
He explained that solar panels would be installed by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on the roofs of these railway stations.
The electricity bill for these stations would be paid by the CEB for eight years, Mr. Fernando noted. He added that railway stations across other rail lines are also expected to be solar powered in the future.
