Railway strike continues for second day
Railway commuters island-wide were severely inconvenienced for a second day today as the strike launched by the Locomotive Operating Engineers' Union continued for a second day.
Trade unions decided to continue with their strike last evening after talks between their representatives and Transport Ministry officials broke down.
The union launched the strike from midnight on Wednesday (6) over issues regarding the scheme of recruitment for assistant engine drivers.
The Transport Ministry meanwhile, has requested striking workers to return to work. Season train ticket holders have also been told that their season tickets have been made valid for travel in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses in order to minimize inconvenience to commuters.
