Parliamentarian Rajitha Senaratne was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in connection to a controversial news briefing, a short while ago.
The arrest was carried out while the parliamentarian was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Narahenpitiya.
The CID, upon the instructions of the Attorney General, obtained an arrest warrant from the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this week.
Senaratne is facing arrest for organising a media briefing attended by two persons which included an individual claiming to be a "white van" driver during alleged abductions before 2015.
An anticipatory bail application filed by the parliamentarian, before the arrest warrant was issued, seeking the prevention of his arrest is set to be heard further on December 30 at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
