Imposing of fines on those violating the lane system introduced in Colombo and its suburbs will commence from Monday, a senior Police officer said today.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Sumith Nissanka in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety told a news conference that for the next few days they hope to continue in creating awareness about the proper use of lanes.
He said from Monday onwards spot fines of Rs 2,000 or enforcing court action will be taken for those violating the lane system.
DIG Nissanka defended the plan to allow three-wheelers and motor cycles to use the same lane used by buses saying that currently they feel that the lane is under utilised due to the limited number of buses and other vehicles transporting staff using this lane.
“We feel that the lane could be used for more vehicles”, he said.
He said the claim made by bus drivers that they cannot see small vehicles cannot be accepted, as they are supposed to travel one behind the other and that was not an excuse.
