News

Supreme Court Judge Justice Sarath de Abrew accused for assaulting a domestic at his residence was today released on bail after he produced himself in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate courts.

He was released on Rs 500,000 surety bail and was ordered to make a statement to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Earlier in the day a team of CID officials visited his residence after the Attorney General’s department sanctioned the arrest of the judge. Hours later Mr Abrew accompanied by lawyers produced himself in courts.
The CID filed a  report in courts on the progress of the investigations on the allegations Justice Abrew.
The 39 year old domestic had complained to the Mt Lavinia police in the early hours of June 26 that she was assaulted on the previous night.
She was admitted by the Police to the Kalubowila hospital soon after and was discharged only last Friday.  Hospital sources said that she had an injury on the head.
She had claimed that  she has been assaulted on several occasions by justice Abrew.
An Assistant Superintendent of Police – Mount Lavinia had visited the  judge’s residence on June 29, to record Justice de Abrew’s statement, but he  had refused to make a statement and asked police officers to come with Attorney General’s permission. A second attempt was made to record his statement last Saturday, but that too failed.
