The second reading of the 20th amendment to the Constitution has been passed with a majority of 61 votes in the Parliament where 156 votes casted in favour of the bill while 65 votes against.
Eight Parliamentarians from the Opposition voted in favour of the government. Diana Gamage, Aravind Kumar, Ishak Rahuman, Mohamed Ali Sabry, Mohamad Nazeer, Mohamed Harris, Faisal Cassim and M S Thawfiq are the opposition MPs who supported the 20th amendment.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is also currently at the Parliamentary complex to witness the voting process. Amendments are now being debated in committee stage and a third reading of vote is also expected later today. The Opposition strongly objected to the Committee stage amendments that are being submitted by Minister of Justice Ali Sabry.
