Update: Palriamentary group leader of Tamil National Alliance(TNA) R. Sampanthan filed a petition today challenging the 20th Amendment bill to the Constitution. As of today afternoon, at least six petitions have been filed challeging the bill by various parties.
Earlier, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) also filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the proposed 20th Amendment bill to the Constitution.
General Secretary of SJB, Ranjith Madduma Bandara filed the application on behalf of the party. Earlier, a Attorney-at-Law also filed a petition yesterday challenging the bill indicating that a referendum is needed to pass the bill.
Along with the TNA leader,Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu of Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Lawyer Naganada Kodithuwakku and Anil Kariyawasam are among the six petitioners.
The 20th Amendment was submitted to the Parliament yesterday by Justice Minister Ali Sabry.
