Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today (21) refused to allow former Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake to make a special statement in Parliament.
Mr Ramanayake, who is currently in remand custody over allegations that he tried to influence the judiciary, had been brought to Parliament by prison officials this afternoon.
Mr Ramanayake asked the Speaker permission to raise a privilege issue in Parliament. However, the Speaker said he could not allow the MP to make a special statement under Standing Orders at this time. He said Mr Ramanayake could raise the matter later on by asking the Chief Opposition Whip for time to be allocated for him during the debate.
