The Environmental unit of the President’s office is studying reasons for the sudden collapse of large trees within the Colombo city and is taking remedial measures, the President’s office said today.
The move came after 27 large trees, some of them beside main roads collapsed during the past few days.
The Press release said that it has been noted that most of the trees had fallen in areas close to Ananda Coomaraswamy road, Gregory’s road and Thunmulla junction.
The newly appointed Special Assignments and Environmental section of the President’s office headed by SSP Roshan Rajapaksa is carrying out the study with Dr Achala Attanayake, Deputy Director of the Peradeniya Botanical gardens and several others.
Decaying of routes, the end of the lifespan of the trees, overweight were among the reasons for most of the trees collapsing.
