Thirty unions comprising teachers and principals will engage in a two-day sick-note campaign starting today (Sept 26) primarily due to long-standing salary anomalies.
The Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) claimed that salary issues in their sector have gone unresolved over the past 22 years.
Among other demands are to allocated six percent of the Gross Domestic Production (GDP) for education, and to refrain from levying charges from parents to provide various services.
The CTSU added that unions would demand to cancel all appointments made using political influence, and reduce the unnecessary workload for teachers.
Unions would flag-off their trade union action by taking part in a protest opposite the Fort Railway Station today, CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.
Apart from disrupting school sessions over the next two days, the trade union action would also see teachers refraining from reporting to mark answer scripts of this year's G.C.E. Advanced Level examination.
