Three prison officials were arrested for being drunk while escorting a group of prisoners from the Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa prisons to the Welikada Prison earlier today (Apr 01).
The arrest took place following a tip-off recevied by the Minneriya police who had searched the prison bus following the alert.
Eight inmates convicted of drug related offences including an individual who was sentenced to death were being transported by these officials at the time of the arrest.
The suspects have been identified as a jailer, a sergeant, and a prisons officer, police said adding that a total of eight officials were in the bus out of which these three individuals had consumed narcotics.
The suspects are due to be produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrates Court today.
