Two suspects including an Air Force sergeant were arrested with 8600 illegal cigarettes in their possession which were to be sold among shops in Hingurakgoda last evening.
The arrest was made after police were tipped-off regarding the suspect who is attached to the Hingurakgoda Air Force camp and had been engaging in this illegal trade for a very long period of time. Police had discovered 8600 cigarettes at the residence of the Air Force personnel.
However, the sergeant, upon his arrest had claimed that these cigarettes were given to him by an unidentified individual.
Meanwhile, the owner of a shop selling these cigarettes was also taken into custody along with 26 illegal cigarettes which were on sale.
Both suspects along with the stock of cigarettes will be produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate Courts today (Mar 25).
