The Colombo High Court today (Feb 07) declared that it would announce the verdict of the case against Ven Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera over the illegal possession of an elephant calf, on March 1.
Both parties in the case had concluded presenting their oral submissions when the case was taken up before High Court judge Sampath Wijeratne today.
The case was filed by the CID claiming that elephants were captured from jungles and later sold during the tenure of Wasantha Senanayake as the Minister of Wildlife.
Charges have been levelled against the Thero under the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance Act.
The Attorney General had claimed that the accused had intentionally kept in his possession an elephant calf sans a legal permit at the Allen Mathiniyaramaya Temple on January 28, 2015.
